Homes in Atkinson that have contaminated water in their wells now can connect to a municipal water system.

Forty-four homes that had been struggling with the contamination now have access to a safe drinking water supply.

Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte and Rep. Annie Kuster had sent a letter to the EPA in December urging the agency to connect all Atkinson homes found with contaminated water.

The community has been struggling with contamination from a chemical solvent for several years.

“This is great news for Atkinson residents,” the three said in a joint statement. “Reliable access to safe drinking water is of critical importance. The EPA’s decision to extend the water main will help ensure Atkinson is protected from harmful chemical contaminates.”

The EPA initially informed local officials that only households with contamination at or above 3 micrograms per liter would be connected to the public water system, but the members of Congress wanted all affected homes connected.

“The selectmen and the town are pleased with EPA’s decision to extend the water main down Deer Run Road,” said Bill Innes, Atkinson town administrator.
