Congresswoman Annie Kuster of New Hampshire’s 2nd District will be hosting a roundtable today at 10:30 a.m. in the Peterborough Town Library. Kuster and other advocates for senior citizens will be speaking with the elderly about how Congress can best protect Social Security and Medicare.

A spokesperson for Kuster, Rosie Hilmer, said Wednesday that any seniors interested in attending are welcome to email her at rosie.hilmer@mail.house.gov.

According to a press release Kuster’s office released Wednesday, the purpose of the roundtable is to offer local seniors a chance to voice their concerns about these federal programs, and to hear about federal services available to seniors in New Hampshire.

Kuster will also speak about a bill she helped introduce. The Caregiver Credit Act of 2014 would amend the Social Security Act to provide those caring for relatives “deemed wages” for up to five years. A congressional committee is considering the bill.

“Since first taking office, Congresswoman Kuster has made protecting Social Security and Medicare for Granite State seniors one of her top priorities. She is hosting this roundtable to bring together local seniors to discuss what more Congress can do to support these crucial programs that so many of them rely on,” Hilmer wrote in an email to the Ledger-Transcript on Wednesday.

On the panel with Kuster will be Steve Gorin, a Plymouth State University professor specializing in social work and the former chair of the State Committee on Aging; Barbara Salvatore of the Elder Rights Coalition and EnGaging NH, and Olivia Zink of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

The panel will also answer any questions participants may have about resources available to them through these federal programs.

The event will also commemorate the 79th anniversary of the Social Security program.
