Nashua veterans greet NH Congresswoman Annie Kuster

NASHUA – A year ago Tuesday, John Elsten was making chili, planning to settle in with a friend in front of the TV for an afternoon of NFL playoff football.

Soon, everything went black. “I was on the floor at halftime,” Elsten on Tuesday told a small group that included U.S. Rep. Ann McLane Kuster, 2nd District Democrat. “It was an artery in my temporal lobe … I never even had headaches,” the 57-year-old Nashua man said.

Elsten was one of several residents of Harbor Homes of Nashua’s Veterans FIRST transitional housing program who chatted with Kuster early Tuesday afternoon as she toured Harbor Homes’ High Street headquarters and the Dalianis House, one of the agency’s two veterans residences.

Kuster, a member of the U.S. House Committee on Veterans Affairs and its Subcommittee on Health, said listening to first-hand accounts like Elsten’s was the chief purpose of her visit.
