Union Leader: Kuster Kicks Off Middle School Election Season

Rep. Ann McLane Kuster began her political career with a successful run for student council in seventh grade.

On Tuesday morning, Kuster returned to that moment, kicking off Windham Middle School’s seventh-grade elections by answering students’ questions about campaigning and sharing stories from her experiences.

The seventh-graders who packed into the cafeteria are now commencing a week of nominations, campaigns, speeches and elections for four class openings — president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.

And after a tour of the school, Kuster was feeling nostalgic.

“This is all bringing back all these memories,” she told the students.

The visit was part of National Principals’ Month, during which administrators were encouraged to invite elected officials to tour their schools, said Principal Patricia Wons.
