CLAREMONT, N.H. -Interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans for college students are scheduled to double on July 1. New Hampshire Congresswoman Annie Kuster is trying to get Congress to act now. She's co-sponsoring a bill to keep rates where they are at 3.4 percent.

Kuster met with students and administrators at River Valley Community College Wednesday. She stressed the negative impact that doubling the rates would have on the average student trying to get a degree.

"There will students here at River Valley and all across New Hampshire and all across the country who will have to leave their education behind. And at a time when college education is critical to the future success of the middle class in New Hampshire and across the country we need to make education more affordable," said Kuster, D-New Hampshire.

Kuster believes her bill will get a vote before the July 1 deadline. She's touring the state to stress the urgency.
