CONCORD, N.H. – As the U.S. Supreme Court begins hearing oral arguments in cases challenging California’s Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage and the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) today reaffirmed her strong support for marriage equality.

“LGBT Americans deserve equal treatment under the law – period,” Kuster said. “Every day that DOMA remains the law of the land is another day that committed same-sex couples are denied access to the benefits all other married couples enjoy. It’s long-past time to strike down this unconstitutional law, and I hope that’s what the Supreme Court will do later this year.”

“The government shouldn’t be in the business of telling people who they can or can’t love or marry,” Kuster added. “We need less government interference in peoples’ personal lives, not more.”

In February, Kuster joined over 200 members of Congress in filing an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in U.S. v. Edith Schlain Windsor, a legal challenge to DOMA.  Kuster is also a cosponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act, which would repeal DOMA.
