CONCORD, N.H. – Today, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) announced that the New Hampshire Highway Safety Agency (NHHSA) will receive a $92,000 federal grant to support traffic data systems and further ensure roadway safety around the state. The grant, administered through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), will help the NHHSA conduct traffic counts and track the number of accidents, injuries and tickets issued on New Hampshire highways. These records, collected by the N.H. Department of Transportation and other agencies, help planners determine necessary roadway repairs, among other improvements, to prevent further accidents, injuries and fatalities. “The safety of our roads is essential to every New Hampshire resident,” Kuster said. “This funding will help build a 21st century infrastructure that keeps our highways safe and our drivers secure.” “I support investments in highway safety,” Shea-Porter said. “I am pleased to see the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration making a smart investment in New Hampshire’s transportation system.” The grant brings the total amount of federal funding awarded to the NHHSA this summer to nearly $1.5 million. In June, the NHTSA awarded three grants, totaling more than $1.4 million, to the state highway safety agency to go toward sobriety checkpoints, breathalyzer devices and seatbelt education, among other programs. “Every dollar counts,” said Peter Thomson, coordinator of the New Hampshire Highway Safety Agency. “We’re here trying to keep our roads as safe as we can, and this money will help. We’ll make sure it’s put to good use.” NHTSA grants are awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation. Additional information on the NHTSA program is available here. ### Press Contact: |
