Kuster Statement on President Trump’s National Emergency Declaration

Feb 15, 2019
Press Release

(Washington, DC) – Today, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement on President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to build his border wall. Among the funds it is reported President Trump is proposing to tap into is $2.5 billion from the Pentagon’s drug interdiction efforts and $600 million from a drug forfeiture program at the Treasury Department. Additionally, it’s reported the President intends to use $3.5 billion allocated for military construction to improve bases for U.S. troops and recruit, train, and retain members of the military. Border Patrol apprehensions at the southwest border have decreased from 1.6 million in FY 2000 to 396,579 in FY 2018. President Trump’s own U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Security Report notes that, “In FY17, CBP recorded the lowest level of illegal cross-border migration on record.”

“President Trump’s fake national emergency is the true threat to our national security,” said Kuster. “President Trump is proposing taking money from our military and critical drug apprehension efforts to construct an unnecessary, medieval wall to fulfill a campaign promise. Nearly 90 percent of illicit narcotics cross the border through ports of entry and President Trump is proposing taking billions of dollars from drug interdiction efforts. That is nonsensical. I’m committed to continuing to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to enact effective, comprehensive reforms that will truly address the challenges faced by our immigration system. The President failed to convince Congress or the American people of the need for his wall and this move is a blatant effort to circumvent the will of Congress and the people.”
