In observance of Women’s History Month, Congresswomen Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Jackie Walorski (IN-02) today introduced a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Anna Mae Hays, the first woman to achieve the rank of general in the United States military. Hays, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 97, served during three wars. Joining the Army Nurse Corps in May 1942, World War II brought Hays to Assam, India, where she saved lives by helping to amputate limbs inside operating rooms constructed from bamboo. Hays answered the call to duty again when the Korean War broke out, landing under naval bombardment and helping to set up one of the first military field hospitals in Inchon, South Korea. As a senior officer during the Vietnam War, Hays traveled to the country three times to personally oversee an increase in the deployment of nurses. After 28 years of service, Hays became the first woman to obtain the rank of brigadier general on June 11, 1970. Throughout her tenure, Hays worked tirelessly on behalf of Army nurses and advocated for policies that continue to help women build a career in the military. Among other efforts, she helped end a policy that automatically discharged female officers who became pregnant. She was instrumental in creating a policy that allowed women with young children to join the Army Nurse Corps reserve. Additionally, she convinced the Army to finance the education of nurses. “Anna Mae Hays was truly a trailblazer who through her dedication to serving her country opened doors for future women in the military,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “From protecting pregnant service members from being discharged to increasing education opportunities for female service members, General Hays has left an enduring legacy that has strengthened our Armed Forces. It’s a privilege to honor such an incredible leader during Women’s History Month.” “Anna Mae Hays’ passion, bravery, and determination led to great strides in how our nation supports and cares for women servicemembers and veterans,” Congresswoman Walorski said. “Her story has inspired generations of women and opened greater opportunities for them to learn, grow, and contribute to our national defense. I am honored to help celebrate the unparalleled leadership and incredible legacy of the first woman ever to achieve the rank of general officer in our military.” ### |
