Representing the 2nd District of New Hampshire

Rep. Kuster Statement on the Passing of Chairman Elijah Cummings

Oct 17, 2019
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Annie Kuster (NH-02) issued the following statement on the tragic passing of Chairman Elijah Cummings of Maryland:

“Chairman Elijah Cummings will be remembered as one of the greatest defenders of our nation’s democracy – a man who served his country and community faithfully for decades. Elijah’s many meaningful friendships across the aisle speak to his character, compassion, and dedication our nation.

“Earlier this year, Chairman Cummings asked us, ‘When we’re dancing with the angels, the question will be asked: in 2019 what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact? Did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing?’ He inspired those around him to lead with conviction and fortitude, and to preserve the values our nation holds dear. His legacy will continue to guide us as we work to uphold our Constitution and bring about meaningful change to improve the lives of all Americans.

“The Congress will miss Elijah’s wisdom and leadership, and our nation will miss his steady voice of reason and his dedication to justice and equality. My heart is with his family, his dedicated staff, and the Baltimore community.”
