Big news - Kinder Morgan Halts Pipeline Project
Washington, D.C.,
April 20, 2016
Dear Friends, This afternoon, Kinder Morgan announced that it has indefinitely suspended the Northeast Energy Direct pipeline project. I was proud to lead the fight against this project, and I am so pleased that Kinder Morgan has listened to our concerns. As the Representative for New Hampshire’s Second District, it is my responsibility to look out for the best interests of my constituents. Over the past two years, it has been a top priority of mine to hear from my constituents about how the proposed natural gas pipeline would impact our New Hampshire way of life. I met with local officials and residents, visited proposed sites, and had countless conversations with constituents about how the NED pipeline would affect our communities and our environment. Through this work, I was proud to amplify the thoughts and concerns of Granite Staters during the review process. I wrote numerous letters to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) that called on the agency to fully consider public input, ensure an open and transparent review process, and to answer key questions surrounding the pipeline’s environmental impact. Based on what I saw and heard, I decided last year that the Kinder Morgan pipeline was not in New Hampshire's best interests, and I was one of the first Members of Congress to come out strongly against the project. While we must pursue smart energy policies that lower energy costs for New Hampshire, this particular project would have taken advantage of our natural resources without providing sufficient benefits for our state. After years of hard work, I am pleased that Kinder Morgan has heard the voices and concerns of the many neighborhoods and grassroots advocates who joined together to work with me to stop the proposed pipeline. Today’s decision to suspend the pipeline project is a big win for the Granite State. I thank everyone involved in the opposition fight for all of their hard work, and I look forward to working with parties around New Hampshire to advance clean energy projects that make sense for our state and our communities.
