Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) questioned TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew about the app’s safety features, or lack thereof, for users under the age of 16. Kuster, a Member of the prominent Energy and Commerce Committee, specifically raised the concerns of parents in New Hampshire’s Second District about the app’s influence on young kids. The full Committee hearing is available here.

“As a parent, I am very concerned about the impact that TikTok is having on our nation’s kids – a worry that parents across my district share,” said Kuster. “Just this week, I heard from a parent in Nashua, New Hampshire, whose child was served harmful content on TikTok. This experience is not unique to their family, and it underscores the need for better child protection on this app.”

“After today’s hearing and Mr. Chew’s testimony, I remain concerned that TikTok is placing the onus on parents to manage the content the app delivers to children rather than proactively addressing these potential harms,” Kuster continued. “We need to take a close look at the questions asked today about whether the app poses a national security risk. I will continue pushing to hold entities like TikTok accountable.”

Kuster is the founder and co-chair of the Bipartisan Task Force to End Sexual Violence. In this role, she has advocated for increased accountability and safety standards on apps and the internet to protect our nation’s kids online.
