Hello Friends,

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. You may have seen in the news this week that the Biden Administration announced new executive action to help secure the Southern border. The president’s executive order empowers immigration officers to remove migrants without a lawful basis to remain in the country and eases the burden on Border Patrol agents. While I’m pleased to see President Biden take action to restore order at the border, I recognize this is not a permanent solution.

Republicans and Democrats need to work together to fix our immigration system and secure our borders.

For months, I have urged my Republican colleagues to join Democrats and work in a constructive and bipartisan manner to reform our broken immigration and asylum systems and support our Border Patrol agents.

Fixing our immigration system will require sincere and genuine compromise. That starts with a bipartisan commitment to take this situation seriously and negotiate in good faith. In a closely divided government, cooperation is key, and both parties must be willing to work together, even when neither side gets everything they want.

The last time Congress and the White House passed a meaningful immigration package was in 1996.

In February, my New Democrat Coalition released a sweeping immigration policy framework outlining ten core principles to protect our national security, fix the broken asylum system, address labor shortages, grow our economy, and restore order at our borders. All while upholding our values as a nation. Most importantly, each principle can be tackled in a bipartisan manner.

We owe it to our country and future citizens to build a system that reflects our values, enforces the laws on the books, treats immigrants with the dignity they deserve, and ensures order at our borders. We can make meaningful changes to our immigration system, we just need leaders willing to put in the work to get this done.

An Uncommon Dialogue on Hydropower and Dam Safety

Thank you to my friend, Dan Reicher, for setting up a great Uncommon Dialogue at Dartmouth!

Dams are the unseen fabric of the Northeast—they facilitate agriculture, transportation, power generation, and so much more. There are more than 4,000 dams in the Granite State alone—and on average, they are more than 100 years old!

It was great to join the Uncommon Dialogue this week at Dartmouth College to discuss the significant funding we secured from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to implement the “3Rs,” rehabilitate, retrofit, and remove the more than 21,000 dams across the Northeast and talk about the future of hydropower and dam safety.

The Future of Artificial Intelligence

Energy and Commerce Artificial Intelligence

The future of AI is bright, but it must be developed sustainably and responsibly.

Artificial Intelligence and the innovation that our nation’s data centers support are critical to America’s future success and economic competitiveness—to maintain our strategic advantages against adversaries like China, we must continue to invest in the development of AI.

However, powering AI models and the servers that host them requires tremendous energy. It’s critical that we expand our energy grid’s transmission and storage capacity to support this development so that rural states like New Hampshire don’t foot the bill for this increased energy demand.

I was pleased to see the Energy and Commerce Committee discuss the future of AI this week and the work that lies ahead to ensure these new technologies are developed responsibly and sustainably.

80th Anniversary of D-Day: This week, we recognized the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when the Allied forces landed on the shores of Normandy and changed the course of World War II.

My father flew over the beaches that day to protect the troops landing on them. The anniversary of D-Day is a reminder of the price we pay for the freedoms we hold dear—we must never forget the courage and sacrifice of these heroes.
