Hello Friends, I hope your weekend is off to a great start! I wanted to update you on what’s been happening in Washington, D.C., and the bipartisan immigration package that Republicans torpedoed. As you may have seen in the news, after months of deliberation, a bipartisan group of my Senate colleagues announced a bipartisan national security package that included a deal to address the emergency at the southern border. This agreement was a comprehensive package, including reforms to our broken asylum system and measures to strengthen security at the border. Importantly, it also supported our allies worldwide in fighting for democracy and freedom. Before this deal could even make it to the Senate Floor or the House of Representatives to be considered, it was squashed by Republicans. The situation at our borders is unsustainable. We need Republicans and Democrats to come to the table and work together to negotiate a deal. That’s how divided government works.

Congress deserves an opportunity to debate this bill on its merits.

It was disturbing to see Speaker Mike Johnson sabotage this bipartisan deal before we even had a chance to read the text of the legislation. The situation at our borders deserves the full consideration of Congress. Preventing a bipartisan deal from being debated simply because it is bipartisan is a disservice to the American people. The United States is both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. We owe it to our country and our future citizens to build a system that reflects our values, enforces the laws on the books, treats immigrants with the dignity they deserve, and ensures order at our borders. The American people expect Congress to work together to tackle the big issues facing our country, not play partisan politics when it’s politically expedient.

I am proud to support legislation to streamline our temporary worker visa process, expand our workforce, and support small businesses across New Hampshire.

Protecting our borders is essential to our security as a nation. We can and must find solutions to this crisis. As Chair of the New Democrat Coalition, I have repeatedly reached across the aisle to find common ground and develop meaningful solutions to our country's biggest problems. I will continue urging Speaker Mike Johnson to change course and work with Democrats to find an agreement that works for the American people. Solving this crisis and restoring order at the border will require sincere and genuine compromise. That starts with a bipartisan commitment to take this situation seriously and negotiate in good faith. In a closely divided government, cooperation is key, and both parties must be willing to work together to get things done, even when it means neither side gets everything they want.

As chair of the New Democrat Coalition, I am urging my colleagues to work across the aisle to secure our border, stem the flow of fentanyl, reform our immigration system and address the labor shortage.

Thank you to all the citizens, business owners, and community leaders across our state who have shared their thoughts and priorities regarding the border and our immigration system. I bring your voices and opinions with me to Congress every single day as we work to tackle this crisis. From the critical role legal immigration plays in bolstering our seasonal workforce to the need to invest in advanced technology to stop the flow of illicit fentanyl into our communities, this is an issue that impacts everyone. Therefore, it is an issue that requires diverse perspectives to make real change.

Real solutions are within reach. We can increase funding and recruitment of border patrol agents to get more boots on the ground. We can increase technology at our ports of entry to improve fentanyl and drug interdiction. We can expand the number of immigration judges to address the growing backlog of refugees and give fast, fair, and final answers to asylum seekers. These are common sense steps that will have a meaningful impact.
Our broken immigration system has plagued Congress and the White House for decades — the last time we passed substantial immigration reform into law was in 1996. It is time for action. We must work together, across party lines, to find a solution. I applaud President Biden’s commitment to finally addressing this crisis meaningfully.

We can and must do more to help hardworking parents as they raise their families and participate in our workforce.

Thank you to Senator Shaheen, Senator Hassan, and Congressman Pappas for joining me to advocate for our mail carriers and system!
|
From delivering life-saving prescriptions to helping Granite Staters run their small businesses, the US Postal Service plays a critical role in our state and our economy.
This week, I joined New Hampshire’s federal delegation, local mail carriers, and advocates to oppose proposals undermining US Postal Service operations and mail delivery in New Hampshire. I was also proud to lead a letter calling USPS to reconsider their misguided proposal to reroute New Hampshire’s mail.
I will keep fighting to ensure New Hampshire seniors, small businesses, and families can get their mail on time.
