Democrats tried repeatedly to bring Speaker McCarthy to the negotiating table to find bipartisan compromise.

Since Speaker McCarthy took office, he has lurched from crisis to crisis, paralyzing the House with partisan infighting and refusing to work across the aisle to get things done. 

Instead of focusing on progress, Speaker McCarthy catered to the most extreme wings of his party to hold onto power. Then, this week, the same far-right lawmakers he empowered voted him out.

As Chair of the New Democrat Coalition, a group of nearly 100 moderate Democrats working to find common-sense solutions, I was proud to reach across the aisle at every turn and offer to work in a bipartisan way to move our country forward. But, over and over again – from whitewashing the horrors of January 6th, to bringing our economy to the brink of default in May, to pushing our country toward a government shutdown – Speaker McCarthy refused to work with Democrats and broke his promises to the American people.

You are only as good as your word — and time and again, Speaker McCarthy has proven that he is not a man of his word. He is simply not trustworthy, and that ended up being his downfall.

Congress works best when Republicans and Democrats work together, in good faith, to deliver for the American people.

This is a critical moment for our country: Congress has a lot of work to do – from funding the government and passing a critical Farm Bill to voting on legislation to address the opioid epidemic, there’s no time to waste getting back on track.

Republicans have a choice now to work with Democrats to find bipartisan solutions or continue the chaos that’s stalling Congress.

We need a more congenial approach to governing going forward.
