CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Members of New Hampshire’s congressional delegation who support replacing a deteriorating bridge in Concord have gotten an up-close look at the problem.

U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Rep. Annie Kuster joined city officials Friday on a tour of the Sewalls Fall Bridge, a nearly 100-year-old span across the Merrimack River. City Engineer Ed Roberge pointed out spots where steel has rotted away and railings have been bent by car crashes.

The weight limit on the one-lane bridge has been reduced, making it unusable by fire trucks and ambulances. About $12 million in funding has been secured for replacement, but the city needs federal permission to tear it down because it is considered a historic structure.
