I hope you all had a fantastic holiday weekend. This week, I held a roundtable to discuss the importance of reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank, which supports many New Hampshire businesses and jobs for Granite Staters. In addition, I spoke at a kick-off event for the New Hampshire Community Behavioral Health Association’s new mental health first aid training program. And I also helped introduce an important bill that will improve support for individuals who act as caregivers for ill family members.

Meeting with New Hampshire Business Leaders to Discuss How the Export-Import Bank Supports Granite State Job Creation

Earlier this week, I joined with local New Hampshire business owners and leaders at BAE Systems in Nashua to call for the reauthorization of the U.S. Export-Import Bank, which is set to expire at the end of September. Many New Hampshire businesses rely on support from the Bank in order to create jobs for Granite State workers, so reauthorization is important to the state’s economic success.

The Export-Import Bank provides risk protection, capital, and other support to help American companies export their goods overseas. In recent years, the Export-Import Bank has supported over $350 million in exports from New Hampshire companies. During the roundtable discussion, I heard from over a dozen New Hampshire business leaders who count on the Bank to support their exporting efforts. These leaders emphasized the importance of reauthorizing the Bank, which helps bolster their own job creation efforts and greatly contributes to the state’s economy.

The U.S. Export-Import Bank provides crucial support for dozens of New Hampshire businesses.. As evident from the stories we heard from our local business leaders during our discussion, Congress must act to immediately reauthorize the Bank. Without it, these businesses will lose critical support for exporting their goods, which will hurt their job creation efforts and negatively impact our state’s economy.

Expanding Mental Health Services in the Granite State

I was delighted to join the New Hampshire Community Behavioral Health Association to kick off New Hampshire’s first mental health first aid training program! This program will provide key community members, such as health care providers, police officers, educators, and others, with the training they need to recognize signs of mental illness so they can provide resources and guidance to prevent crisis situations. We must work together as community members to address instances of mental illness and keep our communities safe, and I was proud to work with the entire New Hampshire Congressional delegation to pass bipartisan legislation to fund programs like this one.

Supporting Family Caregivers

On the heels of Alzheimer’s awareness month in June, I helped introduced legislation that would provide support for individuals acting as caregivers for ill family members or other chronically dependent individuals. The Social Security Caregiver Credit Act would increase Social Security benefits for qualifying caregivers who spend more than 80 hours per month providing care to their loved ones. As someone who served as a caregiver for my mother when she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, I understand firsthand the challenges caregivers face when a loved one or dependent becomes chronically ill. We must ensure that every caregiver has the support and resources they need to look after their ill loved ones and fellow Granite Staters who need the help.

Earlier this year, I was contacted by Myriam Beauchesne, a member of the family that operates Kheops International in Colebrook. Myriam’s green card was on the verge of expiring and she asked for help with the citizenship application process. My office helped guide her through the process and on July 4^th, she was sworn in as a United States citizen.
