It’s been a challenging week following the violence in Las Vegas Sunday evening. Like you, I was horrified to awake on Monday to yet another mass shooting that took the lives of 58 people and injured more than 500. The images and sounds we heard on television, radio, and social media were shocking and deeply troubling. But, in that hellish scene we also saw glimmers of hope as first responders, law enforcement, and concert goers raced to the aid of the injured. I know that we are all praying for Las Vegas.

This week, I took part in a moment of silence on the House floor to honor those who lost their lives and wish well to the injured and mourning. I also joined colleagues on the steps on the Capitol to say enough is enough. The scenes from Las Vegas sadly were far too familiar and it’s time Congress began a dialogue about how we can address gun violence in our country.  That is why I support the creation of a bipartisan select committee to study gun violence and make recommendations for how we can prevent future shootings. Keeping our communities safe shouldn’t be a partisan issue. I have also signed onto legislation to restrict the use of “bump stocks” and have been encouraged that some of my Republican colleagues appear willing to join in this conversation. I believe that we can protect our communities and respect the rights of lawful, responsible gun owners. It all starts with a conversation.
