Serving Those Who Serve Us: Holiday Edition
Washington, DC,
December 9, 2014
I hope you’re all having a fantastic start to the holiday season! Over the last several days, I’ve had the privilege of fighting for Granite Staters in Washington. From pushing to improve the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Family Caregiver program to advocating for pregnant workers to helping provide financial security to individuals with disabilities, I’m working to give the people of the 2nd District a voice in our nation’s capital. Standing up for Caregivers During a Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee hearing, I asked VA officials to pinpoint deficiencies in the Department’s Family Caregiver Program so Congress can take action to improve it and help more of our injured veterans from all eras heal from the comfort of their own homes. This program allows post-9/11 injured veterans to recuperate at home with family and friends and provides much-needed support for family members who act as caregivers. Caregivers enable millions of veterans across the country to live at home and remain active members of their communities, which greatly enhances their ability to successfully transition back to civilian life. No woman should be discriminated against in the workplace just because she is pregnant, and I was proud to help send an Amicus Brief to the Supreme Court in support of Peggy Young, who was unfairly discriminated against because of her pregnancy. I also cosponsored the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which will help protect pregnant workers from this kind of unfair treatment. Advocating for Granite Staters with Disabilities I was proud to reach across the aisle and work with my colleagues from both parties to pass the ABLE Act, which would help provide financial security for individuals with disabilities. People with disabilities and their families should have the opportunity to build savings and invest in the future, just like every other American family. This bill will allow them to better afford a range of everyday expenses, including medical care, employment training, housing, and transportation. For this program, students around the state are making holiday cards this month to thank the men and women at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton for their honorable service. It is inspiring to see our young people so excited to bring holiday cheer to our courageous veterans in the Granite State.
