MANCHESTER, N.H. —

New Hampshire lawmakers are speaking out on the floors of the U.S. House and Senate about the effects that the ongoing government shutdown are having on Granite Staters.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said the shutdown is hurting air traffic controllers and their families. She said President Donald Trump seems to be the only person who doesn't want the shutdown to end.

"I urge President Trump, Majority Leader (Mitch) McConnell and our Republican colleagues to take up these bills to reopen the government," Shaheen said. "I believe we should reopen the government. Let's do our jobs so that the rest of America can do theirs."

Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas recounted the stories of hardship he heard in New Hampshire from those who receive government paychecks or depend on federal services.

"The president says this shutdown is necessary to protect the American people, yet every story I hear in my district demonstrates that this shutdown is making us less safe," Pappas said.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster said officials with groups that deal with domestic violence have told her they might have to cut back on their services.

"Air traffic controllers, TSA agents, DEA agents and even, ironically, Border Patrol agents are not receiving their pay, and our safety is at risk," Kuster said.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan is scheduled to speak later in the day.
