CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- New Hampshire Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan are backing a bill that would prevent new red tape from being imposed on small businesses following a court decision on collecting sales taxes from online shopping.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruling will allow states to collect sales taxes from out-of-state businesses as soon as Jan. 1, 2019. The bill, supported by Oregon Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, would ban retroactive taxation. It also would create an exemption for small businesses that see less than $10 million a year in total sales, and establish an orderly phase-in of compliance obligations.

New Hampshire and Oregon don’t have a sales tax.

A similar bill was introduced in the House, where New Hampshire Rep. Annie Kuster has called for a one-year moratorium on the tax collection for small businesses.
