Kuster Statement on Senate’s Failure To Codify Abortion Rights

**Kuster helped pass legislation in the House last year to codify Roe v. Wade**

Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02), a member of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, released the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2022, legislation to enshrine the protections of Roe v. Wade into law and safeguard abortion rights across the country.

“For nearly five decades, women have had the constitutional right and freedom to make their own reproductive health care decisions. As the conservative majority on the Supreme Court appears poised to overturn Roe v. Wade — taking personal medical decisions out of the hands of women, their doctors, and their families — enacting legislation to codify abortion rights has never been more critical. I was proud to help pass the Women’s Health Protection Act in the House last year to codify the precedent and protections of Roe v. Wade into law. It is deeply disappointing that Senate Republicans unanimously voted against these protections today.

“Granite Staters and the vast majority of Americans overwhelmingly oppose overturning Roe v. Wade. Not only is the right to abortion about bodily autonomy, health care access, and the constitutional right to privacy, but it is also an economic issue — stripping women of their reproductive rights would have catastrophic consequences. As an adoption attorney for 25 years, I worked with hundreds of birth mothers making the most personal, profound, and private decisions of their lives. Not one of them turned to the government to make that decision for them. Despite the Senate’s vote today, I will continue working to ensure women across the country are guaranteed their fundamental right to bodily autonomy, including access to abortion.”
