Kuster Calls for Federal Law Ensuring Reproductive Freedom, Bodily Autonomy

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Annie Kuster (D-NH), a fierce advocate for women’s reproductive freedom and personal autonomy, co-sponsored legislation to guarantee the right to reproductive freedom — including abortion — under the law. The Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) enshrines the right for health care providers to give abortion care to their patients, regardless of where they practice in the United States.

“In New Hampshire, we believe in less government interference in our personal, private lives — that includes access to abortion and the full slate of reproductive care,” said Rep. Kuster. “The ongoing, right-wing assault on freedom and reproductive decisions threatens the lives of women facing heartbreaking, impossible choices. We must safeguard the right to abortion and protect reproductive freedom for all so every person can get the care they need.”

H.R. 12, The Women's Health Protection Act, creates a statutory right for health care providers to provide abortion care and a corresponding right for their patients to receive that care, free from medically unnecessary restrictions that single out abortion and impede access. It sets up a framework for assessing abortion restrictions, preventing states from enacting arbitrary barriers to care, and would enshrine the principles of Roe v. Wade into law.
