Kuster Statement Ahead of the Third Anniversary of January 6th Insurrection

Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement ahead of the third anniversary of the January 6th insurrection and assault on the United States Capitol:

“Three years ago today, our democracy almost failed at the hands of violent insurrectionists. On January 6th, 2021, our country witnessed an unprecedented assault on our Constitution and the peaceful transfer of power — an assault orchestrated and incited by the former president.

“As a witness and a survivor of the events of that day, I am eternally grateful for the 1,000 acts of courage by the Capitol and Metropolitan Police that protected Members of Congress, our Capitol, and ultimately our country. Thanks to these patriots, Congress finished the work of the American people, and our nation woke up to the certification of President Joe Biden's free and fair election.

“January 6th represents many things in our nation’s history: how fragile our democracy is, the threat of the ‘Big Lie,’ and the danger of disinformation. But it also represents incredible hope that we can endure hardships and that our democracy is resilient and worth fighting for.

“With the 2024 Presidential Election on the horizon, we must never forget how close we came to losing our sacred American democracy. We must never forget the bravery and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers who placed themselves in harm’s way to protect our freedom and our country. And we must never allow January 6th to be whitewashed by right-wing extremists who continue to push the ‘Big Lie.’

“It is incumbent on all of us to recommit to upholding our democratic institutions, to respect the rule of law and the Constitution, and to abide by the peaceful transfer of power — the values and principles that make the United States the greatest country on earth.”

Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) was part of the House Gallery Group during the violent assault on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021.
