Kuster Issues Statement Urging Comprehensive Approach to National Security

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement after House Republicans refused to bring up a comprehensive security package, putting our allies in Israel and Ukraine at greater risk, ignoring the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank, and refusing to face emerging threats around the world.

“Let me be clear: I stand with Israel and its right to defend itself and its citizens as it is attacked on multiple fronts. With more than 100 Israeli hostages still being held by Hamas – dozens of whom are suspected to have died – the United States must act swiftly to support our ally. Unfortunately, the legislation put forward today by the Republican majority fails to meet the moment and risks the lives of even more innocent civilians.

“Israel will not be secure so long as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank continues. Terrorist groups like Hamas thrive under chaos and despair, fueling further conflict and emboldening bad actors around the world. The misguided proposal considered by the House today does not include any humanitarian aid for Gaza, jeopardizing innocent Israeli and Palestinian lives.

“At this moment of global turmoil, the United States must be a leader for democracy and human rights. I urge House Republicans to change course and move forward with a comprehensive, bipartisan security package that prioritizes long-term peace and, critically, includes assistance for Ukraine.

“My father, Malcolm McLane, was a World War II fighter pilot and Prisoner of War. Growing up, he instilled in me the importance of American leadership on the global stage and the responsibility we have to stand with our allies as they fight for freedom and democracy.

“The bill on the floor today ignores the harsh realities facing America’s national security. I call on my Republican colleagues to bring a comprehensive national security package to the floor that delivers support to Israel and Ukraine, sends essential humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza, secures our borders, and meets this critical moment.

“Anything less puts American lives at risk.”

Kuster is a vocal advocate for continued U.S. support of Israel, especially in the wake of Hamas’ barbaric attack on October 7th, 2023. She has called for Congress to quickly pass the Biden administration’s $106 billion supplemental request, which will provide approximately $14 billion to support Israel, $60 billion in funding to support Ukraine, and $10 billion in humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza, the West Bank, and elsewhere.
