Kuster Tours Depot & Main Apartments in Salem, Highlights Need for More Affordable Housing

Salem, N.H. – Today, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) toured the Depot & Main apartments and met with the developer, Elm Grove Companies, to discuss expanding the affordable housing stock across the state. New Hampshire needs an estimated 90,000 more housing units by 2040 to meet current demand. Kuster is a strong advocate for building more affordable and workforce housing options to achieve this goal and promote economic growth. She toured the Depot & Main development site in August 2022 when it was just an empty lot.

“Access to quality, affordable housing is essential to our state’s continued economic growth,” said Kuster. “It was wonderful to tour the Depot & Main apartments in Salem today to see these exciting new affordable housing units and discuss how this project can be a model for increasing the housing supply across New Hampshire. Thank you to the leaders of Elm Grove Companies for meeting with me today – I look forward to bringing this success story to Congress as we work to address the housing shortage.”

“Elm Grove is committed to the creation, preservation, and maintenance of high-quality, affordable housing in the state of NH,” said Chris Schleyer, Principal and Head of Property Management at Elm Grove Companies. “Last year, we completed the conversion of 96 apartments in Rochester from market rate to workforce housing, performing a significant renovation in the process. Currently, Elm Grove provides management, maintenance, and remodeling for 11 affordable properties in the state, totaling 600 apartments, with other projects in the pipeline. We expect to break ground on our next ground-up development this year. The need and demand for quality and affordable housing are not letting up. We are seeing it firsthand. We are excited to continue our mission of serving the current and future residents of this great state.”

Kuster is a leading advocate to expand access to affordable housing and incentivize development. Earlier this year, she helped pass the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024, legislation to make meaningful changes to the tax code, expand the Child Tax Credit and Low Income Housing Tax Credit, incentivize research and development, support small businesses, and create a tax treaty with Taiwan.
