Kuster Statement on Passing of Former Congressman Pete McCloskey

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) issued a statement following news of the passing of former Bay Area Congressman Pete McCloskey:

“I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of my friend and former boss, Congressman Pete McCloskey, and I am sending my love to his wife Helen, his family, friends, and many loved ones during this difficult time.

“Pete was many things to me—a mentor, a confidant, and an inspiration, and I credit him with instilling in me the values I strive to live by each and every day.

“Pete was the true embodiment of what it means to be a public servant. He was committed to always putting the needs of his constituents and the American people ahead of political expediency. Time and again, he courageously championed the policies and values he held dear to his heart, and that bettered the lives of all Americans, even in the face of massive political pressure and special interests.

“From his fierce environmental advocacy, founding Earth Day and championing the Endangered Species Act, to standing up for the rule of law and justice as the first member of his party to call for the resignation of the disgraced President Nixon and protesting the disastrous Vietnam and Iraq Wars, he was a prescient and forward-looking leader.

“I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to say goodbye to Pete shortly before his passing and reflect on all he instilled in me and the work that lies ahead. Past, present, and future public servants owe it to his memory and legacy to always strive to do what is right, fight for their values, and strive to build a future worth being proud of.”
