Hello Friends, I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. It has been an eventful week here in Washington, and I want to update you on what’s been happening.

I'm relieved to see these critical bills finally pass the House of Representatives.
|
Last week, Russia launched another strike on Ukraine, and Iran attacked Israel directly. Our closest ally in the Middle East was able to repel Iran’s attack thanks to a multinational effort that prevented the majority of the more than 300 drones, rockets, and missiles from reaching Israel with deadly effect. Unfortunately, the Russian strike destroyed critical pieces of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The Russian and Iranian attacks underscore that our world is at a critical juncture—and that the United States must stand firm with our allies across the globe in their fights for democracy and against tyranny. Iran, Russia, China, and North Korea are working together to undermine the democratic system that has helped promote peace and prosperity in the U.S. and abroad since the end of World War II. These crises are deeply interconnected, and it is long past time for the House, and the United States, to meet the moment.

For months, I have called on Speaker Johnson and Republicans to work with Democrats to pass these critical bills.
|
For months, my House Democrat colleagues and I have implored Speaker Mike Johnson and the Republican Party to allow a vote on the Senate-passed national security supplemental legislation to provide much-needed assistance to our allies in Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, and to provide desperately needed humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza. Thankfully, Speaker Johnson accepted Democrats’ offer, and this weekend, the House finally passed an aid package that will accomplish all four goals: - For the Ukrainian people who have bravely been defending their democracy and their country for the last two years in the face of Vladimir Putin’s aggression, this legislation would provide our European ally with the military capabilities and ammunition they desperately need to counter Russia’s aerial assaults and turn the tide in this years-long fight for their freedom and existence.
- For Israel, these resources provide our ally with the support they need to quickly end the conflict with the Iranian-backed terrorist organization Hamas, secure the release and safe return of all the hostages, the means to negotiate a ceasefire, and will serve as a deterrent against future Iranian aggression.
- For the Palestinian people, this aid package ensures a surge of desperately needed humanitarian aid, food, and supplies to civilians in Gaza. I will also continue pressuring the Biden administration to hold Netanyahu’s government accountable for their actions in Gaza. As the killing of the World Central Kitchen workers earlier this month illustrated, Israel must change course and work to minimize collateral damage in this conflict. We must continue to pressure the IDF to protect civilian lives and ensure aid gets to the people who need it. The prosperity and security of the Israeli and Palestinian people, which I firmly believe can only be attained through a Two-State Solution, depends on life-saving aid reaching Gaza.
- Across the Pacific, this legislation provides critical strategic deterrence for Taiwan and our other allies in the region, who have long stared down the threat of Chinese aggression. China and President Xi are watching closely — and failure to act quickly and decisively will only embolden our rivals in the Pacific.
History teaches us that when America fails to lead, conflict arises. In the late 1930s, the United States stood idly by as Hitler seized territory in Europe and Imperial Japan invaded China. Eventually, these regional conflicts grew into a global war that forced the United States to fight.

I’m proud to carry on the values my father, Malcolm McLane, instilled in me throughout my life.
|
My father, Malcolm McLane, was one of the millions of Americans who served our country during World War II. While he spent the final six months of the war as a prisoner of war, he was lucky to return home alive. More than 400,000 of his comrades made the ultimate sacrifice. This sacrifice illustrates the steep cost of failing to stand up to tyranny and fascism. I’m proud my colleagues in the House heeded this lesson and passed the Ukraine supplemental. We must continue to stand by our allies for as long as it takes for democracy to prevail in the face of tyranny. While I’m relieved to see this legislation finally pass the House, it never should have taken this long. I hope this moment marks a turning point for our country – and the world – and offers reassurances that the United States stands firmly with our allies across the globe in their fights for democracy and freedom.

I will always fight for Granite Staters’ hard-earned benefits.
|
Also, this week, I joined my House Democrat colleagues in rejecting Republicans’ extreme Fiscal Year 2025 budget proposal. From cuts to Medicare to raising the retirement age for Americans across the country and slashing their Social Security benefits, this GOP proposal would represent a massive step backward when the American people are looking for Congress to move our country forward.
Here in the Second Congressional District, 500,000 hard-working Granite Staters would see the retirement age rise and their Social Security benefits cut, forcing them to work longer for less.

Everyone deserves access to affordable, reliable internet.
|
This week, I joined my New Democrat Coalition colleagues in urging Congress to act and save the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which makes broadband internet affordable for 23 million American households.
Here in New Hampshire, nearly 40,000 homes rely on this critical program to grow their small business operations online, access health care through telehealth services, and more. But without Congressional action, millions of families across kusterthe country could lose access to this service by the end of the month.

I’ll keep working to expand access to substance use disorder treatment and recovery services.
|
Nearly a third of Americans experience chronic pain, which continues to be a precursor to opioid use. To turn the tide of the addiction and overdose epidemics, we must increase access to addiction treatment and recovery services and help our communities respond to this deadly crisis at the local level.
This week, my Bipartisan Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Task Force held a roundtable to discuss the future of the substance use disorder crisis and how nonaddictive pain relievers can help in the fight against the opioid epidemic.
