Hello Friends,

It has been a busy week in Washington, fighting for New Hampshire! This week, I was focused on the safety and well-being of our state’s children, inside and outside the classroom. 

Questioning the CEO of TikTok in the Energy and Commerce Committee.

In the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday, I questioned TikTok’s CEO about the company’s steps to protect our nation’s kids.

There is a lot of concern about American data being compromised on TikTok because of the company’s deep roots in China, a foreign adversary of ours. There is also worry about TikTok targeting young kids with harmful and inappropriate content, feeding into the issues surrounding social media and teen mental health.

Just this week, I heard from a parent in Nashua whose child was served harmful content on TikTok – this underscores the need for better child protection on the app. In the coming weeks and months, Congress is going to be taking a close look at whether the app poses a national security risk and what we can do to protect your data and our younger generations online.

H.R. 5 is not a Parents Bill of Rights.

On Friday, I voted against H.R. 5, legislation pushed by the extreme Republican majority which would put politics over parents and insert the federal government into our local education systems.

As a parent, I believe the issues about what books your child reads at home, what you discuss, and your family decisions are personal to you. But, the extreme Republican majority wants to insert the federal government in local school decisions.

In New Hampshire, we believe in local control of education and less government interference in our private lives. I will continue pushing for meaningful parental involvement to strengthen our public schools and fight for less government interference in our personal lives.

Seniors have paid into Medicare their whole lives, and cutting those benefits would be unacceptable. I will fight to protect and strengthen Medicare, Social Security, and Medicare Advantage for the thousands of Granite Staters who rely on them.

This week, I was proud to announce more than $500,000 for Boire Field Airport in Nashua to support the reconstruction of critical airport infrastructure. 

The safety and performance of New Hampshire’s airports are essential to our economic growth and connectivity. This grant will help ensure Nashua Airport remains an active hub for pilots and travelers alike.

Earlier this week, I was thrilled to welcome additional funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support the Candia Fire Department.

From hiring and training new staff to purchasing needed gear, this grant will help protect our communities. I will continue working to ensure our Granite State fire departments have the support they need to retain qualified staff and do their jobs safely.

LIHEAP helps low-income households keep the heat on.

Also, this week, I was proud to help announce over $4.2 million in additional support for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for New Hampshire. I’m proud to have fought for this increased LIHEAP funding to help lower energy costs for Granite Staters. 

On the heels of the extreme nor’easter that blew through our state last week, bringing strong winds and heavy snow, this heating assistance will help ensure our most vulnerable neighbors stay safe and warm.

On Thursday, I was proud to introduce the bipartisan Rural Health Innovation Act to improve access to and the quality of health care in rural communities in New Hampshire and across the United States.

Every American deserves access to quality, affordable health care, regardless of where they live. This bill will help expand access to care for rural families and ensure they are not left without the care they need and deserve.

Mikaela Shiffrin is now the most decorated skier in the world.

Friday, I was honored to recognize New Hampshire’s own Mikaela Shiffrin for becoming the most decorated skier of all time!

On March 11, 2023, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard team’s Mikaela Shiffrin broke the world record for the most World Cup championship races won, winning her 87th race. Her record-breaking win and dedication to the sport will inspire women and girls across the country and around the world.
