In my Washington, D.C. office, internships are in-person and run throughout the fall, spring, or summer semesters for college students. The hours are flexible to accommodate students' hectic course schedules, but generally run 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Interns' responsibilities will vary. They will be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings, assist with media clips, and answer constituent letters. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

In my District office, internships encompass a variety of tasks and assignments such as answering phones, writing letters, and assisting with community outreach. In addition, interns may be assigned to work with constituent services and outreach staff to assist with casework, special projects, writing, and research. As a result, interns gain first-hand experience in the daily functions of a congressional district office.
