Honoring the Heroes of D-Day

I had the opportunity to travel to Normandy, France as part of a CODEL to attend ceremonies commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day yesterday. It was deeply humbling to be in the spot where, on June 6, 1944, hundreds of thousands of brave Allied soldiers risked and gave their lives to begin the liberation of Europe from the evils of Nazi control. Their selfless service turned the tide of the war and bent the arc of history towards freedom. We are forever indebted to them and all our courageous service members. I was also thinking about my father Malcolm yesterday, who flew over the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He was a figure larger than life in my family and his service continues to inspire me to this day.

Providing Veterans with Excellent Care

Last year, Congress passed the VA MISSION Act, which is currently being implemented. Our nation’s veterans deserve the best care possible, and I encourage all veterans to know what they are entitled to under the MISSION Act by visiting www.missionact.VA.gov. In addition, if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact my office at 603-226-1002. I will continue to work with the VA to encourage a successful implementation of the VA MISSION Act. 

Protecting Our Planet 

My trip to France this week also included a visit with members of the French National Assembly. We discussed the ongoing threat of climate change and House Democrats’ efforts to keep the United States in the historic Paris Climate Accord and expand the use of renewable energy. Climate change poses real environmental and economic threats to New Hampshire and the rest of the country, and it’s time for Congress to affirm its commitment to protecting our environment for future generations.

This week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) committed $1.4 million in total for environmental cleanup efforts in New Hampshire. Specifically, the funding will go to projects led by Nashua Regional Planning Commission, the Strafford Regional Planning Commission, the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission, and the Town of Walpole. Rehabilitating contaminated sites into functional, usable community assets is a win for Granite Staters, our economy, and our environment, and this funding is an investment in New Hampshire communities most in need of contamination cleanup. I will continue working to upgrade New Hampshire’s infrastructure and expand economic opportunity for all Granite Staters.

Passing Comprehensive Immigration Reform

On Tuesday, I voted in favor of H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, which passed the House. This legislation provides a path to lawful permanent residence status and eventual citizenship for Dreamers who meet specific requirements and for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. Young Dreamers and individuals with TPS are making numerous contributions to our nation; serving in our military, working and paying taxes, and getting an education. This measure will help ease the uncertainty they are facing and allow them to fully contribute to our nation. I urge Majority Leader McConnell to bring this legislation up for a vote in the Senate. It’s long past time that Congress passed comprehensive immigration reform that truly strengthens our security and honors our values as a nation.
