Discussing the issues that matter

Dear Friend,
I went to the New Hampshire Department of Corrections (DOC) in Concord on Wednesday to sit down with DOC leaders and incarcerated individuals. If one thing from my visit is clear: reform is desperately needed to curb the opioid epidemic. Substance use disorder and crime are inextricably linked and we cannot neglect to support programs to break the vicious cycle between incarceration and addiction. I’m proud to introduce legislation to empower our criminal justice system to help ensure that incarcerated individuals can return home and reintegrate as productive members of our communities. Reducing recidivism is also an important way to save tax payer dollars. You can watch the WMUR segment about my visit to the NHDOC here.
Expanding Access to Quality Healthcare On Wednesday, I visited the Saving People’s Smiles Dental Center in Concord to tour the facility and meet with staff to hear more about the center’s work providing quality dental care to the underserved, including people affected by the opioid epidemic. The Center is dedicated to improving lives one smile at a time, and it was a joy to meet the people behind this critical operation. I’m grateful for everything they do for New Hampshire!
I met with local healthcare professionals and community leaders at Havenwood Heritage Heights retirement community on Thursday to discuss how we can work together to lower prescription drug costs and ensure protections for pre-existing conditions. I am proud to support comprehensive legislation in Congress to improve the Affordable Care Act and will bring these Granite State perspectives back to DC as I keep working to ensure every American has access to quality, affordable care.
Fighting Climate Change I also had the opportunity to tour Stonewall Farm in Keene on Tuesday and meet with Farm staff and local agriculture professionals to discuss the effects of climate change on farms and agriculture businesses and hear how they are doing. When we think about solutions to climate change, it only makes sense to turn to those who work closely with our environment and are dedicated stewards of our land. I’m looking forward to bringing the perspectives I heard during Tuesday's visit back to DC as I continue to support forward-thinking legislation to curb the climate change crisis. You can read more about my visit to Stonewall in the Keene Sentinel.
Investing in Our Community
I was overjoyed to visit the recently reopened Hopkinton Public Library – which sustained significant damage after being struck by lightning last August – and deliver books from the Library of Congress. The Hopkinton Library is a part of the fabric of the surrounding community and I’m excited to see its doors open again!
Supporting our Servicemembers and Veterans
Keeping Granite Staters Updated On Friday at the Tuscan Kitchen in Salem, I provided the Salem Chamber of Commerce – which consists of Salem business owners, non-profit groups and municipal officials – with an update on my legislative priorities in Washington, including workforce development, expanding access to affordable health care, and strengthening New Hampshire’s infrastructure. It was great to talk to the people in attendance and hear from them about how Congress can best support businesses and increase opportunity for Americans.
