Kuster, Pappas and New England House Congressional Delegation Colleagues Condemn LIHEAP Cuts

Today, Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02), Chris Pappas (NH-01) and their colleagues in the New England House of Representatives Congressional Delegation condemned the cuts to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) proposed by the Trump Administration. LIHEAP provides low-income households with heating assistance in New Hampshire and across New England to help ensure they have access to heat during the cold winter months. The Trump Administration has proposed zeroing out funding for the program.

“LIHEAP supports the most vulnerable Granite Staters with heating assistance during the cold winter months,” said Kuster. “President Trump’s proposed cuts to this program are unconscionable and will hurt low-income seniors and families. I will continue to fight for resources that protect families and individuals in the Granite State.”

“Heating assistance is one of the most fundamental services our government provides to low income households,” said Pappas. “Making it through the winter should not be a luxury in this country, we must protect our most vulnerable residents from these cuts that simply don’t make sense and put New Hampshire families at risk.”

“We know New England was disproportionately hurt by the Department of Health and Human Services Fiscal Year 2019 Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program allocation,” said the New England Delegation. “LIHEAP is critical to seniors, people with disabilities, and the most vulnerable in our region. It keeps homes warm in the winter, and cooler in the summer. As a united New England delegation, we are looking into every option to address this issue to ensure our constituents are not impacted.”

Kuster has consistently advocated for robust funding for the LIHEAP program.
