Today, Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Peter King (NY-02) introduced their legislation to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the 23^rd Headquarters Special Troops. The legislation would provide the covert unit, known as the Ghost Army, long-delayed recognition for its heroism during World War II.

“For too long the incredible story of the Ghost Army and its contributions to the allied war effort have gone unknown and unrecognized,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “Our legislation would honor the heroic members of the Ghost Army whose innovative tactics saved thousands of lives during humanity’s darkest hour. This recognition of these brave Americans, whose critical accomplishments remained a secret for decades, is long overdue. I look forward to working with my colleague Congressman King to advance this legislation in the House of Representatives.”

The Ghost Army successfully diverted the attention of enemy forces and is credited with saving thousands of lives during World War II. A tactical deception unit, the soldiers of the 23^rd Headquarters Special Troops contributed to key Allied victories, including Operation Overlord, the Battle of the Bulge and the crossing of the Rhine River. The activities of the unit were classified for over 40 years, preventing public recognition for their heroism.
