Honoring Those Who Keep Us Safe

On Friday, I joined Senator Shaheen to take part in the 20^th annual Congressional Law Enforcement Awards Ceremony in Concord. Our law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep us safe and play a critical role in combating the opioid crisis facing New Hampshire. It was wonderful to honor their unyielding courage, compassion, and dedication to our communities and state and I remain committed to fighting for the support and resources they need to do their jobs and protect Granite Staters. 

Investing in Granite State Communities

I applaud the Senate for unanimously confirming Harold Parker as the next Federal Co-Chair of the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC). Since its inception in 2008, the NBRC has invested critical federal resources to rural communities throughout New Hampshire. From increasing affordable housing opportunities for veterans, to expanding treatment facilities for Granite Staters battling substance misuse, the NBRC has made a real difference in our state. I have introduced bipartisan legislation that was included in the House and Senate farm bills to ensure the NBRC is reauthorized, and I look forward to working closely with Harold Parker in his new position. 

On Tuesday, Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan and Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter and I announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has provided more than $1 million in grants for urban community development and affordable housing in Nashua. Investing in the well-being and success of people who are vulnerable and struggling financially is beneficial to everyone. These funds will help Nashua increase the number of its residents who have the stability that comes with a safe and affordable place to live. In addition, the funds will expand opportunities for people with low and more modest incomes to make a decent living and contribute to our state’s economy. I was proud to join my colleagues for this announcement, and I look forward to our continued efforts to help ensure all Granite Staters can get ahead and thrive.

Championing Higher Education 

I was deeply humbled to receive the New Hampshire College and University Council’s Granite Stater of the Year Award on Thursday evening. The New Hampshire College and University Council (NHCUC) understands the critical intersection of education in meeting the needs of our workforce challenges and acts tirelessly to strengthen collaboration with the business community, improve recruitment of students to New Hampshire colleges and universities, and champion higher education in the state. It was an honor to be recognized, and I look forward to continuing to work with NHCUC to improve skills training and access to quality, affordable higher education.

Conserving New Hampshire’s Natural Treasures

I joined Senators Shaheen and Hassan and Congresswoman Shea-Porter on Wednesday to announce that the U.S. Department of Interior has awarded New Hampshire more than $500,000 through the State Wildlife Grant (SWG) Program to boost Granite State conservation efforts. For generations, Granite Staters and tourists have enjoyed observing New Hampshire’s amazing wildlife, and these funds will help Granite State species with dwindling populations recover. I’m pleased about this collective investment in our environment, and I will continue to push for policies and programs that protect the animals that call New Hampshire home.
