Mourning a Humble Public Servant

This week, Americans mourned the loss of former President George Herbert Walker Bush, who never tired in his dedication to our nation and his fellow Americans. From his heroic service during World War II to his time as Commander in Chief, he always put country first and is an example of a truly humble public servant. It was moving to pay my respects to President Bush as he lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday, and I was honored to attend his funeral at the National Cathedral on Wednesday, where I heard touching words and warm memories from his many friends and family. My parents hosted Mr. and Mrs. Bush at their home in New Hampshire on several occasions and I recall fondly the kindness and humor they both displayed. My heart goes out to the entire Bush family, who while grieving at this difficult time can be incredibly proud of the enduring legacy left by their beloved patriarch.

Remembering Pearl Harbor

I was honored to join veterans and their families this morning to give remarks at the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Commemoration Ceremony at the New Hampshire Veterans Home. Seventy-seven years ago, our country was shocked and saddened by the horrific attack that took place at Pearl Harbor. We will never forget the valor and patriotism of the more than 2,300 sailors, soldiers and civilians who died on that terrible day, and we will forever honor the sacrifice of all our service members and their families.

Strengthening Workforce and Educational Opportunities 

It was great to see Congressman-Elect Chris Pappas and education and business leaders at the New Hampshire College and University Council’s (NHCUC) Forum on the Future in Manchester this morning, where I gave remarks on the deep connection between higher education and small business in the Granite State. I’m excited to continue my work in the new Congress to strengthen our workforce and educational opportunities in New Hampshire.

Increasing Accountability in Government

I’m proud to join with my colleagues and Democracy Reform Task Force leader, Congressman John Sarbanes, to unveil H.R. 1, a package of legislation on voting rights, campaign finance and ethics reforms. We must increase accountability for elected officials, get dark money out of politics, and restore confidence in government. The American people deserve meaningful reform.

As your Representative, my most important responsibility is supporting Granite Staters when they need help with federal agencies. I was contacted by Robin Munson of Amherst, who had an issue of concern regarding a representative fee owed to her by the Social Security Administration (SSA). My staff worked with SSA and helped resolve Robin’s situation.
