Kuster Pushes to Expand Medicare Coverage for Mental Health Services

Today, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) joined her colleagues to co-sponsor H.R. 945, the Mental Health Access Improvement Act of 2019. The bill will stop people from aging out of mental health care when they qualify for Medicare and ensure marriage and family therapy and mental health counselor services are covered. Kuster has heard from mental and behavioral health providers throughout her district that more resources are needed to help Granite Staters obtain mental healthcare.

“We know that expanding access to mental health services is crucial to tackling the opioid epidemic,” said Kuster. “I’ve met with providers in New Hampshire who are deeply concerned about the lack of adequate support for people struggling with mental and behavioral health issues. This legislation will help remove barriers that are preventing people from getting the treatment they need to rebuild their lives and contribute to our Granite State economy.”

In February, Kuster kicked off a listening tour of hospitals and healthcare centers in New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, Kuster will highlight the perspective of Granite Staters as she works to lower costs and increase access to healthcare.
