Kuster Cosponsors Legislation to Transition U.S. to a 100 Percent Clean Energy Economy

Last week, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) joined her colleagues to co-sponsor the 100% Clean Economy Act of 2019, which would set a nationwide goal of achieving a 100 percent clean energy economy by 2050, meaning net-zero climate pollution across all sectors of our nation’s economy. Specifically, the legislation directs federal agencies to use all existing authorities to put the United States on a path toward meeting a 100 percent clean energy economy while remaining technology neutral.

“Building a clean energy economy is a critical part of combating climate change, which is one of the most daunting challenges of our time,” said Rep. Kuster. “This legislation will put our country on the path towards a sustainable future, improve public health, and strengthen our economy while creating green jobs. The time to act on climate change is now, and I’m pleased to help introduce this measure that will usher in much-needed change.”

The legislation aims to:

  • Improve public health, especially for low-income and rural communities, communities of color, Tribal communities, and other vulnerable populations;
  • Enhance job creation and ensure an equitable transition for workers in industries and communities affected by changes in the economy;
  • Provide benefits for consumers, small businesses, and rural communities; and
  • Prepare communities for the impacts and risks of climate change.

Congresswoman Kuster joined the Energy and Commerce Committee in January, and is a member of the Subcommittee on Energy. She is also a co-sponsor of the Climate Action Now Act, which would require the Trump Administration to remain in the Paris Climate Accord and to establish a plan for how the United States will meet its commitment to reduce pollution. Kuster has been vocal about the need to address climate change and has pushed back against the decision by President Trump to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord.
