Kuster Increases Calls for American Energy Independence

Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02), a senior Member of the prominent Energy and Commerce Committee, participated in an Energy, Climate, and Grid Security Subcommittee hearing entitled, “American Nuclear Energy Expansion: Powering a Clean and Secure Future.” During the hearing, Kuster highlighted the promising future of clean energy technology and stressed the importance of American energy independence.

“In New Hampshire, we know firsthand the role that nuclear can play in providing carbon-free energy,” said Kuster. “While we evaluate ways to maximize the potential of advanced nuclear energy, we must ensure we are not making foreign adversaries like Russia rich in the process. I am proud to join my colleagues from both sides of the aisle in banning imports of Russian uranium. Not only will this make our energy supply chains more secure now and in the future, but it would also create an opportunity to shift production of these fuel sources to the U.S. and our allies, creating jobs and depriving Russia of a critical source of revenue.”

Russia currently provides nearly 14% of America’s low-enriched uranium, a key component for nuclear fuel. Kuster, a member of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, is a leading voice for continued U.S. support for Ukraine since Russia launched its illegal invasion of the country last year.
