NH Delegation Welcomes Over $1.6 Million in DoD Funds Headed to Dartmouth College and UNH

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH), along with U.S. Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01), are announcing that a total of $1,641,032 in Department of Defense (DoD) federal funds are going to Dartmouth College and the University of New Hampshire (UNH). These funds were awarded through the DoD’s Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) and will be used for advanced research and development of new technology supporting defense and workforce enhancements across the country.

“I’m proud that New Hampshire’s advanced innovation is being recognized by new investments in research and projects that will bolster our national security and promote economic development,” said Senator Shaheen, senior member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee. “These awards headed to Dartmouth and UNH will play a crucial role in supporting new technological developments that will help keep New Hampshire at the cutting edge of defense manufacturing for generations to come.”

 “I am excited to see federal funding heading to Dartmouth and UNH to grow their research capabilities. New Hampshire is a leader in innovation, and I’m glad that these Granite State institutions will be able to advance their cutting-edge research to help keep our country safe, secure, and free,” said Senator Hassan.

“New Hampshire universities, researchers, and students are leading our country and the world forward through their work and innovation,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “I’m thrilled to see this significant funding heading to Dartmouth and the University of New Hampshire to take their research to the next level. I will always fight to strengthen our STEM workforce and programs.”

 “Our universities across New Hampshire continue to accomplish groundbreaking work that strengthens our national security and supports our armed forces,” said Congressman Pappas. “This funding from the Department of Defense will help facilitate innovative research by New Hampshire universities, furthering our technological advancements as well as studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.”

The awards are as follows:

·         $829,373 to the University of New Hampshire to support the research and development of a high-speed camera system for observing the streamer to leader transitions in lightning;

·         $588,609 to Dartmouth College to support their project: SuperDARN Digital Imaging Enhancement to Resolve Smaller Scales and Enable Multi-Mode Operation;

·         $223,050 to Dartmouth College to support the Kurt Lesker PVD 75 System for screening and prototyping long carrier lifetime infrared semiconductors.

Through DURIP, DoD supports purchases of major research equipment to augment current and develop new capabilities. This investment enables universities to perform state-of-the-art research that boosts the nation’s technological advantage, while ensuring that our future science, technology, engineering, and mathematics workforce remains second to none.

Earlier this week, Senators Shaheen and Hassan, as well as Rep. Pappas, visited BAE Systems to highlight how $35 million in funds allocated through the CHIPS and Science Act is helping to produce technology essential to the defense industry and critical to national security.
