Kuster Tours Claremont’s Sugar River Revitalization Project

Claremont, N.H. — Today, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) visited Claremont’s Sugar River Revitalization and Brownfields Redevelopment Project to hear about how the project is helping reshape Claremont’s downtown and riverfront. During the tour, Kuster highlighted the $800,000 in funding for the revitalization and redevelopment work she secured as part of FY2025 Community Project Funding. Along the way, Kuster was joined by Mayor Dale Girard and Director of Planning and Economic Development Nancy Merrill to discuss the project’s impact on the city’s economic growth.

“I’ve always said that when we invest in our local communities, our entire state feels the benefit,” said Kuster. “Public spaces like Claremont’s riverfront are important to the local community, helping spur economic growth and social connection while improving public health. Between these critical investments in public infrastructure and safety and workforce development and affordable housing, Claremont is well-positioned to thrive in the years to come, and I cannot wait to see the positive impacts these projects will have on the community.”

“We are so grateful for Congresswoman Kuster’s support of Claremont,” said Mayor Girard. “Her recommendation for this project through the Community Project Funding process demonstrates her commitment to our community’s growth and prosperity. This funding is crucial for the revitalization of our downtown area, which will not only enhance the beauty and functionality of our city but also provide significant environmental and economic benefits.”

Kuster is a strong supporter of investments in public infrastructure and has advocated for the critical role revitalization and redevelopment projects have on improving economic mobility and community well-being. Kuster has secured significant federal funding for Claremont, including:

  • $800,000 for the Sugar River Revitalization and Brownfields Redevelopment Project to design and plan for ADA-accessible pedestrian access points and invest in site work to prepare to host community spaces at the remediated Synergy Site;

  • $963,000 for the Claremont Enhanced Communication and Public Safety Assurance Project to enhance the Claremont Police Department’s ability to safely and effectively respond to emergencies across Sullivan County;

  • $1,466,700 for the Claremont Access, Restoration, Development, and Safety (CARDS) Initiative to reconstruct sections of the Charlestown road, including new pedestrian facilities, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, curbs, new storm drains, culverts, sewer lines, and water lines; and

  • $50,000 as part of the USDA Rural Business Development Grant to provide support and technical assistance to local entrepreneurs, the establishment of a business recruitment and retention strategy, and the development of a Sustainable Startup Program to support the growth of small businesses in the city.
