Kuster Welcomes FDA Decision to Reevaluate “Added Sugars” Labeling on Pure Maple Syrup

Today, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) welcomed the announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that it will reevaluate the labeling of pure maple syrup and honey. Earlier this year, the FDA had announced that pure maple syrup and pure honey would need to have an “added sugar” label. Kuster joined a bipartisan call to the FDA to exempt maple syrup and honey from these requirements. Yesterday, the FDA announced that it would reevaluate the requirements for maple syrup and honey.

“Requiring producers to label pure maple syrup and honey as containing ‘added sugar’ is misleading to consumers and potentially harmful to producers’ economic well-being,” said Kuster. “This flawed policy could give consumers the impression that pure maple syrup and honey contain artificial sugar additives. I’m encouraged that the FDA has decided to reevaluate its decision to require this labeling. The maple syrup industry is central to New Hampshire’s identity, and as the FDA explores other labeling options, I’ll work to support maple syrup and honey producers, and ensure that burdensome regulations are not put in place.”
